FAQ: Boat transfer

The vessel transfer process can seem complicated and time-consuming. Indeed, even the transfer of a small boat can be a headache of several weeks, as there are many authorities involved in ensuring its successful completion.

Let’s look at some of the most frequently asked questions about the process of transferring your boat.

What is the cost of a transfer of ownership of a boat?

The cost of transferring a vessel depends on different parameters. Firstly, the stamping of the private contract results in 3% of the objective value of the vessel to be paid. Then there is a series of fees, which are necessary to cover the various administrative and procedural costs associated with the transfer of the vessel and vary according to the length of the vessel, its use (professional or amateur) and so on.

For example, for a transfer of a private boat under 10m:

    • eVoucher (code:6293 Water Recreation/ Sailing license for boats up to 10m. amateur) 50€
    • EKOEMN: 50€ in case of a speedboat or 35€ in case of a non speedboat
    • eTax (code: 4824 Small Boat Ownership Certificate) 20€ – if the registration number does not start with “L”
    • Change of vessel name, transfer of vessel envelope or colour 15€ each

What are the necessary documents for the transfer of a vessel?

The transfer of a vessel requires the submission of a number of documents. These necessary documents are crucial to ensure that the procedure complies with the legislation in force.

The following are indicative examples of the documents that are required:

  • Permission to operate a voyage
  • Private agreement with tax stamp from the tax office
  • Declaration of non-docking of the vessel
  • Responsible declaration regarding the equipment of the vessel
  • A declaration regarding the authenticity of the data
  • Responsible declaration in case of loss of ownership certificate
  • Certificate from the tax office/accountant par. 1, article 19, law 27/1975
  • In the case where the vessel has been declared immobilized for any period within the last 5 years, the immobilizations by the respective port authority
  • Photos of the buyer

The supporting documents vary, of course, depending on the length of the vessel and other particularities. Feel free to contact us, so that we can see together what applies to your case!

Can the transfer of a vessel be done remotely?

Although some steps in the transfer of a vessel have been digitised, such as the issuing and payment of the stamp duty on the private contract, the crucial step of the process will need to take place at the port authority where the vessel is registered. Therefore, the complete transfer of a vessel requires both remote and face-to-face actions. However, none of the above need not stress you out! Contact us directly and we will take care of all the hassle of your boat transfer.

How is the transfer of a boat with a trailer done?

The transfer of a vessel and trailer are separate procedures. The first concerns the port authorities, the second the transport services. The vessel will be transferred according to the procedure mentioned above, while the transfer of the trailer with registration plates will be carried out separately to a transport service, as is the case for cars.

Can a boat be transferred without its engine?

Of course it is possible! If the vessel has a registered engine, this must first be deleted at the port authority where the vessel’s file is located, and then the vessel can be transferred as a cutlass (without engine).
